Today, what I’d like to do is share a little bit of my personal journey, and give you a surprise at the end. Those of you that have been following me know that I’ve been in the process of writing a book. My hopes is that when I share this story and what I’ve learned and the lessons I’ve gained, that it may inspire you to take on your big dream. You know that one that you think about, but you haven’t gone after? That one.

As I reflect back on this journey, I noticed there were a few key components. The first one was I had to get really clear about embarking on something that was difficult for me, and it would take courage. I had to get clear about what the impact would be if I actually accomplished it. For me, writing this book would mean that millions of people could have these communication tools and create more joy, and less stress, and deeper connection in their lives. Done. I definitely wanted to do that.

The second piece of this was how was I going to do it. I was so confused, so I went around and asked other people how they did it, but what I learned was I had to find my way. My way might have meant that I did it differently than other people did it, and that was okay. Rather than writing in a traditional way, I often worked on Skype, or Google+, on video with people, and that really helped me get through my blocks. You’ve got to find your way.

The third question you want to ask is how have you overcome things in the past? My way is through collaboration with other people. When you’re reflecting on how you’ve overcome other things in your life, it can give you great clues as to how you can do it this time as well.

The fourth important piece is to have a rock solid team. What I’m speaking about is not just people with a skill set to help you, in this example, write a book, but also the emotional support. Who are the people that are going to be there for you? Who are the people, when you think you can’t do it, or you get scared, or defeated, or you fail, who are the people that are going to remind you that you’re amazing and you have to go for your dreams? The other part of that rock solid team is the people with the skill sets that you need to complement you to create this.

Lastly, don’t forget a deadline. The deadline is so key because it helps you prioritize and focus. So many things are going on in the world, you don’t want to let this one go by the wayside another year.
Think through your dream, what it’ll be, and if those five steps might help you get clear on how you can get the inspiration and initiative going to take that challenge on.
